A Short History of
Trinity Church...
As Myrtle
Beach began to grow in the mid-1930's as a resort area,
a number of resident Episcopalians began to investigate
the possibility of organizing an Episcopal Church in the
area. During the summers of 1935 and 1936. the Reverend
Thomas S. Tisdale of Marion worked with interested
individuals to seek out support for, and organize, a
congregation. The first services were held on Sunday
afternoons in the Methodist and Presbyterian churches.
In March, 1937, Myrtle Beach Farms donated a lot on
Highway 17 at 30th Avenue North for a church building.
Donations to a building fund came from residents of
Myrtle Beach and outside sources. On November 23, 1939,
work on the church building began. The Diocesan
Convention of 1940 admitted the Mission to the Diocese
to be called "The Church of the Messiah."
The Church of the Messiah became a parish in the spring
of 1949. In 1951, Mrs. Margaret Wiley gave a lot at
the corner of Highway 17 and 31st Avenue, opening the
possibility for major expansion. In the same year the
church was renamed Trinity Episcopal Church. Other
expansions took place in 1957, 1958, 1965 and 1973. in
1988, A Capitol Funds Campaign brought in pledges
amounting to more than $1.2 million for a major church
expansion. The ground breaking was held in November,
1989, in conjunction with the 50th Anniversary of the
parish. In November, 1991, the new additions were
dedicated and consecrated.
Trinity has been active in missionary outreach and was
instrumental in establishing a mission church in
Surfside Beach in 1958. That mission became a parish in
1977 and is now the Episcopal Church of the
Resurrection. In the 1960's, a summer chapel, St.
Stephens', was built in North Myrtle Beach on land
donated by a Trinity family. The church was completed
in 1970, became a mission in 1974, and now continues as
a "sister parish."
Thus, from a small summer Chapel established in the
1930's, Trinity has grown to a faithful and active
parish of more than 700 communicants.
